Journey to the Spirit World aboard the John Holland Express

By Donna Gray and Jodi Glynn Patrick

The day before a March 1, 2003 appearance with famed psychic mediums John Edward, Suzanne Northrop and Robert Brown [John Edward & Friends, Las Vegas], psychic medium John Holland, author of Born Knowing: A MediumÆs Journey (Hay House, Inc., 2003) graced me with a personal interview for BookReview.com. Having read his book, I already was astonished with his down-to-earth approach and his sensitivity toward his audience; the next day, seeing him in a group setting gave me an up-close appreciation for his skills; but the personal interview- I invite you to witness for yourself his rare gift in the following dialogue! When John Holland - out of the blue! -- told me things that only a beloved dead father could know- but I get ahead myself! I must be patient and let you find your own messages in the following transcript!

That is how it is for most of us who approach the subject of psychic mediums: understandably, it is hard to fully believe or accept the validity of the gift or the experience until we witness it first-hand. I will be forever grateful that my husband Dave was able to share the interview - and the journey from Wisconsin to the spirit realm -- with me through John Holland.

To make the transcript flow easiest for you, John HollandÆs remarks are in italic, mine are in bold, and I am the interviewer unless it is indicated that Dave asked the question. When John Holland refers to "John," "Suzanne" or "Robert," it is in reference to his psychic colleagues. For those who want a fast read, skim to the questions that interest you. But in fairness and appreciation of the opportunity granted to me, I present the longer version for those who seek the fuller experience.

Read and enjoy what I wish for each of you up close and in person. DG

The Interview

How would a typical person recognize if they have a gift such as yours?

If a phenomena that keeps happening or occurring, such as a significant dream that is the same every time. You keep feeling the nudge. Psychic ability begins as an intuition; knowing I should do this. It is psychic [when it becomes] the secondary ability to use intuition and make it work for you. If it is frequent, keeps happening, consider it seriously. When that occurs, take a workshop and seek guidance.

So dreams- repeating dreams, do mean something?

Same dream? If itÆs the same dream, something is happening. Consider warnings of physical illness; for example, if I dream of water up to my neck, IÆve learned to know that my bronchitis is kicking in.

How do you know itÆs not just coincidence?

I donÆt believe there are any coincidences. I think events occur like a string of pearls, and one links to the other until you have a pearl necklace of a whole string of experiences. At the same time, metaphysics doesnÆt explain everything. If the picture keeps falling off the wall and you think itÆs your relative, first check the nail! Because people want that connection so bad, they sometimes really work to make it fit. But I donÆt believe in coincidence.

Is what you have like ESP? The sense of something others donÆt understand? Is that the feeling?

ItÆs a sensitivity or an awareness. Mine just happens to be heightened.

When a loved one "crosses over" do they immediately meet up with other friends or family? Do they first become indoctrinated with ones who have passed before them?

I believe family and friends are there to greet you. You hear many psychics, mediums give their thoughts on what they think happens. I donÆt know. To answer such questions- I think we are always greeted by someone. In my book, I talk about death bed visions -- it happens all the time. Why are they calling on people who have passed away rather than concentrating on last moments with those at their bedside? I believe our dead are always there to help you go home.

When we "go home," do you think we get assignments of some kind - like jobs?

I think you can do what you want. Smoke, not smoke. I think the other side is all thought related. Like Robin Williams portrayed in What Dreams May Come. I think it is whatever you want it to be, and it is unique to each person.

I was most fascinated with the parts the book dealing with children. You agree with other psychics that children grow up there? That totally amazes me.

YouÆve read John EdwardÆs book and I can relate an account related to it to help you with the whole theory. I donÆt know what itÆs like - obviously no one does until we actually get there. But there is JohnÆs account of Mikey, put in his new book Crossing Over. He died when only three. I did a reading for the aunt, Donna. Her father came through, there were other validations, but Mikey didnÆt come through. A couple days later, IÆm in the bathroom - IÆm always in the bathroom when they come to me [laughs] - and I hear, "Tell my mother I like her hair." I donÆt know how I knew, but I felt the age and I did know. ItÆs Mikey. Later I called up Donna and said, "What were you doing three days ago? Did you go to the beauty parlor?" She said, "Keep talking." I told her the message and she replied, "John, three days ago, my sister and I went to get our hair frosted and no one in the family noticed." Someone noticed. Mikey noticed. And back to your question, I believe we do grow up on the other side. People can come through who died years ago as elderly to me and still make sure you know itÆs that person who died when they were young.

You would automatically describe them as I know them?

They will come through to me so that you will know who it is. I have a friend who is a psychic artist. She will start drawing as she gives you other validations, and sheÆll turn the picture around and thereÆs your dad! But it may be that he comes through as he looked when he was in the military, if thatÆs a picture you have of him. Or when he passed, if that was impressed upon you. That ability is really amazing, by the way. The woman I know in Massachusetts was already an artist, and then they started to come through her. I saw an awful lot of that [psychic artistry] in England, too.

They are so far ahead of us! Our country is just starting to get into this.

Which is weird, because spiritualism started here, in New York.

IÆve thought itÆs in the water there, with so many of you who have the gift coming from New York. You, John, Suzane, George Anderson. All born east of mountains.

John, George, James [Van Praagh] - I joke that if youÆre a male from our area and your name starts with a "j" sound, youÆre a medium! But the stuff I saw in England- I was so lucky to go there and be trained by professionals. I thought, "If IÆm going to do this, I want to do it right. I donÆt want to go back to the type of ridicule I felt during my childhood." And so I strive for evidence. People ask, "Can you prove it to me?" I cannot prove it to you. All I can do is give the best evidence possible. You walk away saying, "How could he know that?" Or I talk about things you know nothing about; information about your girlfriendÆs mother -- you check it out. Then you know. I worked for nine years doing two jobs until Suzane said, "You have to quit one of them. Where do you want this to go, what do you want to do with it?" IÆll never forget the day I made the appointment to meet her - I was so nervous! IÆll never forget her impact on my life. For nine years, I would do my day job and then do sittings. It was taking its toll. Especially doing sittings in my home all the time. But I was fortunate that I never had an incident where someone freaked out or followed me around, stalking me. I lived on east coast, as you mentioned, and then went to LA, then moved back. I started doing group readings at a book shop. I told the owner, I said, "I hate to be in front of people, so I need to practice. Can I do it here?" I did a workshop with 35 people; it kept selling out and thatÆs how it started. We signed a contract and in a little bookstore that comfortably held 40, we went to 100, sold out. Went to 250. Now some people say I have too many.

How many people in the audience do you feel comfortable having?

2,000 [laughs]. I donÆt mind the 250 groups, although I just did 360 and found out that was okay, too. I have a two-year wait list, over two years. So I do groups of eight now, where they have me for two to three hours, so I can reach more people. It works; itÆs intimate, people get along. But those really drain me. They are very mediumship intense. But I will always do one-on-ones.

IÆve become aware that some claim to be mediums who can do readings on-line. Once a week they have meetings, then you send a donation. Do people really believe this?

Maybe it can be done, I donÆt know. In England, there are people who can do readings: you send me a letter, they sit with the letter and describe your loved ones. It can be quite accurate. If the spirits want to get through to you, they will get through to you. Maybe through email- I donÆt know. How are these people- what evidence do they offer? Is it specific or general? IÆd have to see-. A lot of people still wonder, "How can you do it by the phone?" But itÆs all energy related. If they want to get through, they will get through.

In the book, I was moved when reading about the one woman and sister who came to see you.

The account of the little boy in the wheelchair? Touching story. Johnny came through. I asked, "Why is he out of his chair, whatÆs the significance about that?" Sure enough, on the gravestone the wheelchair is behind him and the little boy is walking with the hand of God. That really got me.

Do you ever feel set up?

By?

By our loved ones who have crossed over? Re-phrase: Can they orchestrate things that happen?

Totally. I know they can set up things. I feel they can "influence" versus "control" - they donÆt take possession of you or anything like that. But they can put you in the right place.

When you used to "work for a living," and know people in the traditional workplace, you also realized that you knew things about them-.

Yes. After the [car] accident, it started. I knew things. It kept happening. I got so many validations at the hotel bar I worked at that. The hotel gave me my own section of their newsletter: entitled: JohnÆs predictions. I was excited and confused: why is this all happening now? I traced it back to the accident. An accident or trauma changes you. A car accident; you can experience that and feel sorry for yourself or you can believe it happened for a reason. You have the free will to deal with it as it happens and decide what it will mean.

How did you hone this as a gift?

I read as many books as I could get my hands on and also had a great colleague, Vincent J. Barra, who helped me discover and explore my abilities. He was a great friend and colleague at the time since he too was a psychic for over 25 years. I also started to meditate more and join study groups. which I encourage so you can have the support of others to share experiences. Then when the mediumship started to happen, I went to England to study with the mediums there.

What do you believe is the percentage of people in this country who have the gift?

I think everybody does, to some extent. WeÆre all born with intuitive ability. ItÆs been practiced in the East with kids for centuries, but weÆre raised in the West and we go to school, and - Ignorance, too, can be a barrier. Some people have a fear of this and they push it away. Hollywood made it into woo-woo. WeÆre all born with intuitive psychic ability, but- everyone can learn to play the piano, but not everyone is going to be a pianist. We have the talent for the gift to a lesser or greater degree, and that talent is honed with education and experience.

We first have to be open to it and believe our loved one is there?

Yes, or weÆll explain it all away, trust me. YouÆll smell roses in the winter and say, "Oh, it must be an air freshener from next door." Being human, we try to say, "Oh, this canÆt be." People say, "How do you get this power?" and I think IÆm talking to a wall. I have a talent for mediumship, yes, but IÆm consciously doing something with it.

When you first got the feelings- and recognized it- after that, how did you turn it on and off at will?

By knowing how it works. By knowing the mechanics of mediumship. IÆve learned how to turn it on and how to shut if off. It would take a strong spirit to overcome that. Because if IÆm in a restaurant and I get a nudge, what am I supposed to do, walk across the room to a person dining and say, "Hey, your motherÆs coming through?" I wouldnÆt do that to a person. If I was at a party and a guy walks in a door and his dead brother walks in with him, am I supposed to walk up to that guy and say, "Hey, your brotherÆs with you"? I leave it up to the spirit. I say, "Hey, you want to make a connection with your brother, you make it happen! Let someone talk to him about psychic ability or tarot or talk about the subject and then I can get in there. If you want to contact your brother, you set up the situation and then IÆll do it, but I am not walking in there cold."

Dave: Do they have different powers? Levels of powers? Say somebody comes in strong-.

Usually, yes. If someone in your life had a big mouth here, they have it over there and it helps me, trust me. Sometimes IÆll get someone who is so talkative, and the son will say, "Why is my dad so talkative? He was always so quiet!" And IÆll say, "Maybe itÆs because now he can get a word in!" But when people pass, they donÆt change. They donÆt suddenly have these exalted powers. So I tell somebody, "If your dad was cranky, thatÆs how theyÆll come through to show a personality for validation."

I donÆt expect a reading- let me say that upfront. I didnÆt ask for this interview for that. But I want to ask, how come I never hear from my father? I know we canÆt pick and choose, but how can you discern who it is that you really see? Say someone who is older. How do you know it isnÆt an uncle rather than a brother or my dad?

First question: your dad could be on his own journey now. I think he knows you love him and youÆve heard from who youÆre supposed to hear from. People ask me if their loved one has reincarnated. I had this woman call me once who said, "John, my husband just died and I want to know who he is and where he is!" I said, "Why? Are you going to go and get him?" I donÆt have that kind of power, to know who he is if or when he is reincarnated, or where he is. So your dad could be off doing his own thing. Second part of your question: When I do this, I usually know if this is an older person. Everyone knows how John [Edward] works- and I had this one woman who, for her, I wasnÆt going fast enough and she got all [visibly irritated] and she said, "Is he below me or beside me?" And I said, "You watch John on TV-". IÆll know if itÆs a brother. I get the information. If youÆre sitting next to me, IÆll hear "brother, brother," but I donÆt know if itÆs your brother or your fatherÆs brother. So I have to ask, "Did you lose your brother?" And then usually I know what side of the family itÆs on. So I feel it in an innate, kind of way.

So- did somebody work on a train? I keep seeing train-tracks. How is a train connected to you?"

Dave: Oh, [surprised expletitive]. [To Donna]: How did your father die?

Donna: He was hit and killed by a train.

Exactly. The reason why I got that - my dad worked with the transit authority, and I can only use what I know, the categories [set up] in my brain. And whenever I get that, I know transportation - bus driver or train. IÆm talking to you, IÆm talking to your husband, and yet having a three-way conversation. So I keep seeing this train, the locomotion and movement in my mindÆs eye. So- he was killed by a train. I know it is significant; you know why.

By a train. He was in the car, 44 years ago January.

Dave: They had a freight train parked where the crossing was, and there were two sets of tracks and he was the eighth or tenth in line, and the cars were going out and around the guard. This was in Chicago and behind the line and went he went across- [smacks fist to palm of hand].

In a car. Now see, thatÆs specific.

YouÆve just thrown us for a loop-.

I can say to you, "WhatÆs with the train?" To show you how mediums work- you know who Sal Mineo is? Yes? The actor? I am talking to the to this girl, and the grandmother is referenced by the grandfather. The girl doesnÆt even know his name. She only has called him "Poppy" and he died years ago. And I say, "Is his name Sal? Is it Minny? Is it Salvadore?" "No, I donÆt think so, John." "Will you do me a favor? When you see your grandmother or your mother, ask them what your grandfatherÆs name was." His name was Salmunento. I kept saying [during the reading], "I see Sal Mineo here!" How could they have gotten me to say- maybe if IÆd just gotten "Sal" and she said "Salmunento," then okay- but they made sure I said "Sal Mineo." So they went into my data bank and said, "How can we get him to say Salmunento?"

I love it that you call it that!

My data bank? HereÆs the medium, hereÆs the spirit: How can we get him to say Salmunento? Well, he knows the name Sal Mineo, letÆs impress him with this.

What did you feel on 9/11?

What everybody else felt. I did an interview and the interviewer asked, "Why didnÆt you know about this in advance?" And I told her, "Because IÆm not God. IÆm not the person who knows everything." I felt that pit in my stomach like everybody else did. Maybe I felt it more so- like somebody punched me in the stomach. Remember the Challenger? IÆm an upbeat person, but I was so depressed a person for a week before that. I go into- not a depression, but IÆm so down. I think the same thing happened on September 11th.

Did you go to New York City afterwards? Yes? What did you feel?

I didnÆt go to the site- just in case, you know what I mean? But New York itself is a systems overload for me. I can feel hundreds of voices in that city. I feel all that energy. I could never live there.

How long do you think a person should wait after a loved ones death to contact them?

Good question. Going to a medium should not be seen as a cure for the bereavement process. You have to go through the stages - have to. If you want to come see me afterwards, fine. I think three to six months. Give them a chance to know what theyÆre doing, because remember- they have to learn how to do this, too. We have you, we have a medium, they realize they have a human antennae, but how does it work? They have to learn how to work with us. Who has the poodle dog?

Poodle? I donÆt know-.

Poodle. I donÆt know who it belongs to. A little dog, a foo-foo dog, a lap dog. ItÆs over by you.

I canÆt remember- any poodle.

WhoÆs Rose?

Rose Albert, years and years ago-. I knew her, a good friend -- her aunt-.

The poodle is backed up by Rose. IÆll just leave it there.

Of course -- Rose! My dear, dear friend Judy Rose! Rose is her last name!

With the dog?

I donÆt know.

Can you follow that up? I say a poodle, but as long as you understand, a little foo-foo dog.

Oh my gosh, sheÆs one IÆd really like to hear from! Oh my, IÆve lost my train of thought! But no, my next question- IÆm seeing people online- one womanÆs daughter died this past year, and she didnÆt know where to turn. And I wondered, how do you know when itÆs time to do something?

I think thatÆs when other people come into your life and bring up the topic of mediumship or put a book in front of you. Some people go through life with no need; many people go through life without mediumship, and do very well.

Every hospice should have a reading list of psychics as an alternative way of comforting-

As an option. We donÆt deal with death as a society anymore. We donÆt see the natural progression in life; we put our elderly in nursing homes and then donÆt discuss death. WhatÆs with peanut butter, ReesesÆs cups? WhatÆs that with you?

ThatÆs our son, David. Thank you, David!

That makes sense to you?

Yes. IÆm so glad our people like you so much! They donÆt go to people they donÆt like.

ThatÆs a good point. A couple people, every once in awhile, it could be that IÆm the wrong medium for the person or it is not the right time for a sitting. If no one comes in 15 minutes, thereÆs not a charge because they might need a woman, or need a different kind of channel.

Do our loved ones soul have a limit as to how often they can come to us?

No. People always think your loved ones are around you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But it takes a lot of energy for them to come to us. They are operating at a higher level of frequency, and they have to lower their energy to come to us, to come through a medium in a way we can read. It takes a lot of work for them.

What about a person who constantly seeks it because they need it so desperately?

There are groupies, mediumship junkies who need it desperately. If you went to a medium last week and then came to see me, the last meeting may have had a lot of information that I could have used, that is already told. Unless youÆre trying to study it-

Do you rate other psychics?

Not really. I watch for audience response. I see some of them who are general, some are specific. I mean, a train, ReeseÆs peanut butter cups. Some people take it in stride and it means nothing to them. Others-.

What qualities should a person look for when seeking out a psychic or medium?

Some people find me through my website, and I say, "You did what?!" Because word-of-mouth is how most people find me. But itÆs okay - good - to ask, "How do you work? How long is a session?" and to have a little education and have done a little research. Because sometimes when people come to see me, I wind up training them the first 20 minutes. But now, when they come to me through the book, theyÆve already read it and we can start. I donÆt mind training them, but they get confused - "I donÆt understand how this is working." Many times wives bring husbands who donÆt know how this works and we spend the time educating the other person instead of reading. The selection should be word of mouth and it should be specific evidence that the medium offers.

The interview continued, but I close here with his last advice, and my own: Read Born Knowing. And youÆll know more about this fascinating psychic medium John Holland.

Biography:

John Holland is an internationally renowned psychic medium who has spent more than 20 years investigating and developing his abilities as a psychic medium.

John regularly lectures on both the East and West Coast, and his public demonstrations provide audiences with a unique glimpse into the fascinating subject of mediumship, which he delivers in his own unique style, combined with incredible intensity and compassion. JohnÆs caring nature provides consistent counseling and support to his clients, as he helps them connect with loved ones who have passed on, often bringing a sense of closure and healing. ôMediumship is more than just delivering messages,ö he says, ôitÆs about the confirmation that our æspiritÆ lives on, once we leave our physical bodies and that we are still connected to those who have passed on before us.ö

John is keen to promote the difference between being a psychic and a medium. A psychic can draw information from your aura, which can provide knowledge about both current and future events, whereas a medium is the conduit between the physical world and the spirit world û in other words, the connection, but as John so often calls it - a 'soul to soul connection'.
