Getting to interview the author of “Staying Health in Sick Organizations -The Clover Practice” (Clover Practice) was unique in itself, but having used some of the techniques recently in an office situation, I was even more intrigued to speak with Dr. Kathleen Paris about her philosophy behind this book. In a quiet little spot called Otto’s on Madison’s Westside, I chatted with Dr. Paris. The two of us have had a lively exchange of comments on Twitter and LinkedIn since I read the book. Although I love social media in all its forms, meeting people face to face is the best way to gauge a person.

When I read the Clover Practice I had an overwhelming sense that the person who wrote it was sincere in the desire to help and had a gentleness of spirit that comes from living thru personal trials. Upon meeting Dr. Paris I found my intuition correct and that she was genuine and humble too! She explained that being a single parent , having family members with addiction problems and participating in support groups helped her see that the core principles she had already been working with could support everything she wanted to do with the book . Growing up and in her adulthood, Paris said, “I thought I had to be perfect. But by learning to speak the truth as I know it about myself and to myself, I found great relief. This is the message I have tried to share and teach in this book”

As is the case for many authors, this book was a long time coming. Dr. Paris described the 15-year process of giving seminars, writing content, thoughts, collecting examples and refining her work until it extended to 12 chapters. When her husband finally asked her, “Are you going to be one of those people who never writes the book?” She took action. Dedicating her book to her father, who’s “word was golden” (referring to speaking the truth), Paris decided to self publish thru Book Serge, an arm of Amazon.com.

A laughingly, self proclaimed “reductionist” Paris edited her 12 chapters down to a core 6, including a center section that provides some self assessment homework. If she had to add one more thing back into the book she said it would be a chapter about how “Craziness is Catching” referring to gossiping in the work place. One of the things she said also learned while working on the book was to find a getaway, a place without interruptions to write. Interestingly, Paris and her husband were both working on books at the same time and chose to rest a hotel room away from their home to write. She said, “When you’re paying for the writing space literally by the hour, you stay focused and get a lot accomplished.”

The reception to this book has gone so well that Dr. Paris has an active upcoming schedule presenting seminars on The Clover Practice for Facilitators (March -Atlanta), The Clover Practice for Change Management (June-Boston), Executive Women’s Retreat (July-Wisconsin) . There is also a demand for the Clover Practice Series of books for other demographic groups.
